Reports Description

As per the Bag-In-Box Container Market analysis conducted by the CMI Team, the global bag-in-box container market is expected to record a CAGR of 6.5% from 2025 to 2034. In 2025, the market size is projected to reach a valuation of USD 5.1 Billion. By 2034, the valuation is anticipated to reach USD 8.8 Billion.

Overview

A Bag-in-Box (BiB) container is a type of packaging that is made to hold, transfer, and pour liquids. The inside of the box is constructed of a flexible bladder that is commonly made of several layers of metallized film, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), or other plastics. The outside of the box is made of rigid corrugated fiberboard. The inner bag is a folding liner that keeps air out when you pour the contents out through a built-in spout or tap. This inhibits oxidation, extends shelf life, and lets practically all of the air out to cut down on waste.

Key Trends & Drivers

  • High demand from food & beverages sector: One of the main reasons the bag-in-box container market is increasing is because of the food and beverage industry’s increased demand. The demand for this is expanding since wines, juices, dairy products, sauces, and ready-to-drink drinks all need longer shelf life, less waste, and easy dispensing. The growth of this sector, which includes wine-on-tap in hospitality, craft drinks, and e-commerce direct-to-consumer models, speeds up adoption because the product is light, inexpensive to ship, and doesn’t break during shipping.
  • Favorable properties: The bag-in-box container market is growing as they are light, protect against light and oxygen, and use less expensive material to manufacture. This makes the packaging 80 to 90 percent lighter than rigid ones. Food and beverages sector prefers this solution as it keeps sensitive liquids fresher for a longer duration, dispenses product accurately to cut down on waste, and is easy to fold up and store. Recyclable multi-layer films, biodegradable options, and less travel that leads to lower carbon emissions are all eco-friendly features that align with the world’s aspirations to use less plastic and customers’ demand for eco-friendly packaging. This helps the hospitality and e-commerce companies adopt bulk forms, which are better for delivering meals online and in cities as their valves don’t leak. Thus, driving the market growth.

Challenges

  • Competition from alternatives: The bag-in-box industry is restrained by the presence of alternatives such as flexible pouches, rigid plastic containers, cans, and PET bottles. These alternatives are better for portability, premium branding, and high-pressure or single-serve purposes. They are also taking market share in places where BiB’s concentration on bulk is limited. These other options usually cost less up front, take up less space on store shelves, and can be used with carbonated or thick foods. This changes demand, especially in new areas where affordability and scalability are key.
  • Technical & performance limitations: The bag-in-box sector faces a major challenge due to the material deficiencies, such as punctures from rigorous handling, less durability in extreme temperatures or rough conditions compared to glass or metal, and a limited ability to store or transport huge amounts of goods. Because of these limits, the rate of product damage (up to 29% in transit) goes up substantially, and it is hard to use with specialized dispensers. This makes it hard for businesses like dairy and bulk chemicals to embrace the technology.

Opportunities

  • Rising innovative product launch: The growing innovative product launch is expected to drive the bag-in-box container market over the projected period. For instance, in October 2025, Belgium-based Smurfit Westrock van Mierlo showed off the Bag-in-Box Powergrip, which is meant to replace regular 2- to 5-liter HDPE bottles and jerrycans. It is supposed to meet the requirements of new European PPWR laws. The company says that the Bag-in-Box Powergrip can be used in a number of different liquid packaging areas, such as cleaning solutions, oils and lubricants, agrochemicals, and industrial uses. It can be used for both filling by hand and automated high-speed manufacture.
  • Advancements in technology: Technological advancements significantly contribute to the establishment of the bag in box container market. New materials and ways of making things have led to packing solutions that last longer and work better. For instance, improvements in barrier technology help keep contents safe, which makes bag-in-box containers more appealing to producers. Smart packaging technologies like QR codes and sensors are also becoming more popular. They give customers more information about where a product came from and how fresh it is. As these technologies get better, they are expected to make bag-in-box containers more useful and attractive, which will help the bag in box container market grow.

Category Wise Insights

By Material

  • Plastic: The plastic segment is expected to capture the largest market share over the projected period. The growth in the segment is owing to its favorable properties such as cheap cost, flexibility, lightweight and superior barrier properties. The increasing deployment of innovative solutions is another important prospect for the development of the market. For instance, in December 2025, MOL Group’s lubricant subsidiary, MOL-LUB Ltd., introduced a new eco-friendly Bag-in-Box packaging solution for its range of lubricants and engine oil products. This innovation reduced the plastic usage by 80%. These bags consist of an inner plastic bag and an outer cardboard box, combining lightweight design with robustness and functionality.
  • Paper and paperboard: The paper and paperboard segment is expanding rapidly. This growth is owing to the growing awareness regarding environmental sustainability among individuals and industries. Moreover, the increasing investment by the key market players for the paper and paperboard bag-in-box container is propelling this growth. For instance, in 2025, Stora Enso invested around 1.2 billion in renewable packaging.

By Application

  • Dry: The dry segment is growing at a stable rate over the forecast period. Food processing makes people want more bulk dry ingredients, such as spices and mixes. BiB protects against contamination, lets it manage portions with taps, and reduces weight by 80–90% to make logistics easier, which is why it works for e-commerce and industrial supply chains.
  • Liquid: The liquid segment dominates the industry. The segment growth is owing to the increasing use of BiB in the food & beverage sector, such as wine, fruit juices, sauces, edible oils and others. Further, its cost-effective nature and high protection against the spoilage of product catalysing the industry expansion.
  • Semi liquid: The semi liquid segment is growing at a substantial rate. Quick commerce and food service using 5–20-liter containers for bulk semi-liquids cuts down on waste by more than 99%, and let’s get the product delivered right away. As cities grow, the medium-capacity sectors are growing the fastest. Sustainability standards prefer lightweight BiB over stiff plastics. This cuts shipping costs by 80–90% and meets recycling rules in Europe and Asia Pacific.

By Industry Vertical

  • Food and Beverage: The food and beverage segment dominates the market. Individuals often use BIBs to package sauces, syrups, wine, fruit juices, edible oils, dairy liquids, and more. They are great for fragile things like wine and juice because they can keep liquids fresh, stop oxidation, and make things last longer. The packaging is lighter, easier to handle, and cheaper to store and move than glass bottles or cans.
  • Personal Care: The personal care market holds the largest market share. As more people want eco-friendly products for their homes and personal hygiene, like detergents, surface cleaners, and fabric fresheners, BiB’s lightweight, recyclable design fits right in. It cuts down on plastic use and transportation costs in cities where cleanliness is an issue.
  • Industrial: The industrial sector is growing at a rapid pace driven by the growing adoption of solutions such as chemicals, adhesives, lubricants, and oils.
  • Others: The “others” segment include Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Solutions, Agricultural Inputs, Automotive Care Products and Paints, Coatings & Construction Chemicals.

Regional Analysis

The regional market is divided into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and LAMEA. Here is a brief overview of each region:

  • North America: North America is expected to dominate the bag-in-box container market. The growth is being driven by an abundance of demand for liquid packaging in both the food and non-food industries. Demand is still strong because the region already has a strong wine and beverage industry and BiB formats for juices, dairy alternatives, sauces, and liquid foodservice concentrates are becoming more popular. A growing number of individuals in the US and Canada are looking for packaging that is easy to use, lasts a long time, and is good for the environment. This makes BiB a better choice than rigid glass and plastic containers. The trend toward eco-friendly packaging, which is helped by corporate sustainability efforts and changing state-level rules on plastic waste, makes it more popular in the market. Also, the wide availability of sophisticated retail chains, the growth of e-commerce, and a solid cold-chain infrastructure make it easier to distribute BiB items in multi-liter containers that can be stored on shelves.
  • Europe: Europe captures a significant market share. The growth of the region is owing to the increasing shift towards environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the presence of majors such as Smurfit Westrock and their constant product launches are what are driving the industry growth. For instance, in September 2025, Carlsberg and DS Smith unveil a bag-in-box solution – Fachpack 2025 reflections – ‘World-first’ EU food safe approved recycled PP.
