The prices of centrifugal compressor lubricants are largely dependent on the type of product, grade of viscosity, and the requirements of the application. Compressor and turbine oils made of mineral oil that fit the ISO 6743-3 L-TD requirements have a bulk price of USD 3 to USD 8 per liter. These are the most cost-effective products to lubricate centrifugal compressors and can be used in less demanding applications, especially those with lower temperatures and moderate drain interval requirements. Normal synthetic PAO compressor lubricants – to the same specifications as turbine oils in the ISO VG 32 and VG 46 grades – cost USD 8-USD 20 per liter in bulk supply, with the premium over mineral oil being justified by longer drain intervals which lead to lower cost of lubricant per hour when the per-hour cost of lubricant is combined with the cost of pure lubricant and other High performance extended life synthetic lubricants with enhanced antioxidant packages and extended drain interval certification – such as the ExxonMobil Mobil SHC Centrifuge Ultra class – command USD 15 to USD 35 per liter, the added premium being warranted by the measured extension of the drain interval that saves a lot of money per hour of operating the compressor on the total lubricant program cost. Specialty process gas lubricants – such as PAG-based lubricants to use in hydrocarbon gas service and food-grade synthetic lubricants to use in processes where there is a risk of incidental food contact.
